Architecture and Landscape

Architecture and landscape are connected in many different ways. Buildings can blend almost invisibly into the surrounding landscape or they can deliberately enhance and accentuate it. They can adopt topographical forms or generate their own particular type of landscape. Edition 12/2011 addresses this multi-faceted topic via a variety of examples: from Ryue Nishizawa’s Teshima Art Museum, which oscillates between architecture and land art, to unusual projects such as houseboats and tree houses; from the new Trollstigen viewing platform by Reiulf Ramstad Architects to New York’s High Line by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, who turned a former elevated railroad into a popular urban park. In addition, a detailed expert contribution explains the extent to which green roofs can positively influence both the buildings below them and the surrounding city climate.
