At the end of the year, we present three timber buildings that have convinced our editorial team in every aspect.

In southern Normandy, Java studio has transformed a 1970s-era single-family dwelling into a modern family home. In addition to enlarging the living space, the clients desire for a stronger connection to the surrounding natural landscape was also fulfilled. During the radical conversion only the solid masonry construction has been preserved, the existing saddle roof was extended towards the gable sides, including house and garage. Today, the exterior, load-bearing wooden construction characterizes the appearance of the house. Continue reading

The residential building in the Prättigau region of Grisons takes up the architecture of the typical regional cattle sheds in a contemporary form. Located on a south-western slope, the three-storey building is half dug into the hillside with the upper floor offering a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Especially the regularly structured facade made of pre-greyed spruce wood is reminiscent of the way the stables were built. The interior surfaces are finished in larch wood and spruce three-layer panels, with matching spruce veneer on the furniture. Continue reading

On the 1300 m² lot in the Oberreute, the main family house and the annexe with an area for guest are located on the upper slope, creating living space against the rural Allgäu panorama. Family life takes place in the upper part of the house, which is held up by wooden supports and is reminiscent of a building on stilts. The facade is covered in light-colored, vertical spruce slats, deliberately positioned window openings frame views of the surroundings. Untreated wood characterizes the interior as well as fixtures and furnishings, creating a cozy atmosphere. Continue reading
