In ropeless elevator systems, the cars usually circulate in a loop with separate upward and downward shafts. The concept is reminiscient of a paternoster except that the cabins move independently from each other. At the upper and lower ends, rotating “exchangers” divert the cabins from one shaft to the other. Ropeless systems are particularly suitable as shuttle lifts with stops every 50 to 100 metres.
