In 2000, the explosion of a fireworks depot devasted much of Roombeek, a largely industrial zone in Enschede. The accident resulted in an area of 40-hectares that required redevelopment. The Villa Welpeloo is situated in a part of Roombeek with more exclusive single-family housing, designed in part by internationally recognized architects. The house consists to roughly 60 per cent of recycled materials – mainly local industrial waste products. New building elements include the concrete foundations, mechanical services and technical installations, sealing layers, the fenestration, and many of the internal finishings.
