Object+Product: HafenCity School in Hamburg

In the heart of Hamburg's Sandtorpark/Grasbrook district, the HafenCity School by Spengler Wiescholek, a primary school with all-day care, a daycare centre, and an unusual combination with 30 residential units, has opened its doors. A limited plot of land allowed the planners to create a contemporary, compact, and therefore resource-efficient complex. The complex is further distinguished by its unconventional approach to the school's outdoor spaces. There is a partially covered, ground-level schoolyard, while a second schoolyard, designed as a roof garden, offers a unique recreational experience. Concrete plays a key role in the HafenCity School's structure and was also used in the interior design. In the hallways, the auditorium, the dining hall, and the stairwells, the architects chose unpretentious exposed concrete surfaces for the walls.
