Comprehensive School in Splügen

Splügen lies at a height of nearly 1,500 metres above sea level in the Swiss canton of Grisons. The comprehensive school that serves the various communities of the Rheinwald valley was erected there at the end of the 1960s. The building is not just as an educational institution, though; it is also a centre for cultural events, sports and political activities and thus provides an important amenity for the entire valley. After many years in which no changes had been made to the school, it was urgently in need of attention. Neither its technical condition nor the spatial facilities permitted a modern functional use. The architectural competition, therefore, foresaw not only a refurbishment of the entire outer skin, including the windows and sunshading, but also a restructuring and extension of the functional areas and other improvements – but without changing the overall volume.
