People are not disabled, they are disabled by design – this statement could have been the basis for the planning of a wheelchair-accessible family home in Gstadt am Chiemsee. Following a serious accident, the client became paraplegic and reliant on a wheelchair, often dependent on the assistance of others. Within his own four walls, this was to be different. The challenge of building a wheelchair-accessible house where the client could move around as freely as everyone else was the starting point for all considerations. An intensive design process ensued, during which the client's wishes and needs were translated into reality by Munich architect Florian Höfer. Particular emphasis was placed on freedom of movement, unobstructed views while seated, and the design of the lighting.
