Laboratory Building in Utrecht

The university campus is situated on the outskirts of Utrecht and was first developed in the 1960s. A new master plan drawn up in 1986 by Rem Koolhaas formed the basis for a number of further buildings, including the Minnaertgebouw by Neutelings and Riedijk, a university for economics and management by Mecanoo, dining halls by OMA and a library by Wiel Arets. A new structure has now been added to this complex: the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Research Centre by Ben van Berkel architects, Amsterdam. In this building, the molecular structures of DNA will be investigated with the aid of electromagnets. It is hoped that the outcome of this research can be used, among other things, in the fight against the HIV virus.
