University for Applied Design in Wiesbaden
The new university for design in Wiesbaden is well integrated in the neighbouring faculty developments. A grove of oak trees on the site of a former film production company is reflected in the glazed facades of the new structure, which responds to the trees in other ways as well. To protect their roots, for example, the basement extends under only half the building area; and the surrounding ground is not sealed off. Similarly, account is taken of the existing environment in the choice of materials and the form of the slenderly dimensioned, transparent wood-and-glass facades.
