In the 1950s, when the city of Darmstadt still bore the heavy scars it had suffered during the Second World War, a series of discussions was held (the so-called “Darmstädter Gespräche”), the aim of which was to address the new architectural situation existing in the post-war years. In the congress that took place in 1951 with the title “Man and Space”, an important issue was discussed, namely how people, “as the most important yardstick for architectural activity”, were to live in future.
