This development was conceived as a self-managed communal residence for single people and couples who have reached the post-family stage of life. Every storey contains private as well as communal spaces, the layout and orientation of which vary. The communal realms are open to all residents and here, too, the spatial atmosphere differs from floor to floor. A stroll through the building, therefore, reveals quite distinct recreational areas that provide an opportunity for spontaneous encounters. In addition, the expansive central circulation zones with their inbuilt cupboards for individual use are extended by naturally lighted recesses. Every dwelling opens on to the outdoor realm in the form of balconies drawn round three sides of the building. The room-height fenestration allows a view of the external space even from residents’ beds.
