Artist's Studio on Fogo Island

On Fogo Island off the coast of Newfoundland stand six new, abstractly shaped ateliers in which artists can work undisturbed in the rough landscape. These autonomous studios are fitted out with solar and photovoltaic panels, fireplaces, water cisterns and composting toilets. The Tower Studio winds roughly 10 m upwards with offset diagonal and sloping surfaces. The architects developed the timber-frame structure on the basis of a prototype that served as a model for the building workers. Plywood sheeting was used to brace the outer walls on both sides, with black-painted softwood boarding applied to the external face. Internally, the white finish to walls, soffits and floors helps to dissolve the spatial edges.
