The new Polish National Stadium stands on the earthworks of the former Dziesiciolecia Stadium, which was erected in 1955 from the rubble of the Second World War. One condition was that the development should interfere as little as possible with this material. The new structure was, therefore, integrated into the existing topography of the site. The duality of the solid, historical stone plinth and the new structure – consisting of steel, glass and a Teflon membrane – lends the stadium for 55,000 spectators an unmistakable identity. The expanded-metal-panel facade in the Polish national colours of red and white also makes its own contribution in this respect.
