The new premises of the Dutch Ecological Research Institute, NIOO-KNAW, are located along a major road on the northern outskirts of Wageningen. The 11 000 m² complex consists of an almost 100-metre-long block parallel to the street as well as a series of annexes to the east, which contain storage spaces, greenhouses, aviaries, workshops and larger experimental laboratories. Further laboratories and offices are located in the main building. Claus en Kaan designed a low two storey building with a rather deep plan where three atria provide natural light. Storage rooms are located in the darker inner spaces which do not require natural light. The laboratories lie directly behind the west façade, facing the street; the offices are located on the east, north and south.
