Le Midi – “midday” – is the name the French apply to the south of their country: midday, the time when the sun is at its zenith. Le Midi, however, is associated above all with the sea and yachts, with cafes and fine restaurants, and with resorts like Sète and Saint Tropez. Situated somewhat inland, removed from the main stream of tourism, lies Montpellier, the fastest-growing city in France today. There, in a neighbourhood that includes the city hall by Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid’s archive and library building (see DETAIL 11/2012), the Georges Frèche School of Hotel Management by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas is the newest and most unconventional project in an ambitious architectural programme.
