Crèche, Kindergarten and Childcare Centre in Vienna
This new municipal structure provides facilities for 133 children. Built to passive-energy standards in a prefabricated form of construction, it has a quadratic layout with a “filtering” layer of ancillary spaces, stairs and climbing plants round the outside. On the ground floor, the crèche children are divided between two group rooms, with the wide hallway serving as an additional play area. On the upper floor, only one group room is enclosed – within glass walls – while the other areas for three groups have been merged to form a large play space with room-height glazing. Elevated recesses provide quiet corners from where the activities of other children can be observed in the bright, open space.
