Primary School and Day-Care Centre in Hamburg

Surrounded by office buildings and housing developments, this “hybrid” structure unites dwellings with a primary school, a day-care centre and a nursery for a total of 330 children ranging in age from three months to 12 years. The complex consists of a five-storey school building with day-care facilities, and a seven-floor housing block, on the lowest two levels of which is the nursery. The rooms for the kindergarten are in a single-storey linking tract with a small playground in front. The roof of this intermediate tract serves as an outdoor recreation area for the nursery children. Because of the density of the development, the main playground has been placed on the roof of the school block. Used by the schoolchildren during the morning, it serves as a recreation area for the crèche and kindergarten in the afternoon. The playground is enclosed within a four-metre-high protective fence that will act as a support for climbing plants and one day form a green crown to the building.
