»Blue Box« in Bochum

Only a trained eye could recognize the comprehensive refurbishment that the University of Bochum’s “Blue Box” has undergone. Built in 1965 as a provisional refectory, this steel structure was used from 1971 as the university library and finally relegated to a store, at which point, the large areas of glazing were boarded up with blue panels – hence the nickname. In the early 1990s, however, the dilapidated building was gradually reactivated and turned stage by stage into a “centre for learning” for the architectural faculty by Professor Wolfgang Krenz; and in 2009 funds became available for a complete modernization.
