The townhouses in Riem, a district in Munich, are both rigorous and flexible in their conception. A private initiative comprising 24 families set out to create an ecologically minded habitat with high design standards. The architects developed six identical groups, each with four units. A lofty living area extends the length of the ground floor; adjoining terraces serve as thresholds to both the garden and the sheltered forecourt. Terraces cut out of the attic level provide rhythm to the massing and direct daylight to the staircase. Alternating fields of slate cladding and extensive glazing animate the facade. By employing wood in combination with a delicate steel structure, its structural potential was optimised.
