Built in 1904, this former grain store is situated at the heart of the “Alter Hafen” rehabilitation area, adjoining an artificial basin of water on the banks of the River Main. Now, after its restoration, extension and conversion, the complex forms the cultural focus of this part of the Bavarian city. The imposing timber structure in the central section of the old building was preserved in its entirety and serves as the entrance and foyer, with a museum shop. The two side tracts were gutted, and cubic concrete structures were inserted within the external walls, creating ideal conditions for exhibitions. The space between the refurbished outer walls and the concrete cubes serves as a circulation route with stairs and lifts, so that visitors are constantly reminded of the old building substance as they pass through the museum.
