Energy savings and reduced costs play an increasingly important role not only in the construction of buildings, but also in their operation. In order to take proper account of these factors at the teaching stage, a course in facility management was instituted at the College of Applied Science in Kufstein, Austria, as one of four new disciplines. The present building was to reflect this content both outwardly and inwardly. In addition, the structure was to serve students actively as an object for research by allowing them to take measurements. The lecture halls, library and administration are laid out around the atrium / assembly hall, forming a compact entity in which there is a sound relationship between the surface area and the volume. The atrium is not only the centre of communication for the engineering school; it is also available for external uses, thus furthering the idea of an economic exploitation of space.
