Artist’s Studio in Dublin

The small volume of the studio is set between two external spaces: a rear patio and a small garden on the street face. The structure is 5 × 5 m on plan and has a room height of 2.40 m at the entrance, increasing to 3.15 m in the middle, where the floor is set 75 cm below ground level. The walls and soffit are in exposed boarded concrete, the texture of which is accentuated by glancing light from two top-light strips. Polished concrete slabs set peripherally at different heights form planar elements for working, sitting and resting. The cubic space, with large continuous areas for hanging pictures, is distinguished by its calm, introverted character. Visual links with the exterior are mainly from sitting positions.
