"De Hogeweyk" - a Housing Estate for Dementia Patients in Weesp

In the Dutch dementia village "De Hogeweyk" in Weesp, near Amsterdam, things are a little different: Residents with dementia have a great deal of freedom of movement, the chance for a normal daily routine, and an active life. Although people with Alzheimer's are often still very physically fit, their memory and cognitive abilities have usually declined significantly. They feel disoriented and can no longer manage without assistance. To enable the elderly residents to live as dignified, happy, and above all, carefree a life as possible, the operator of De Hogeweyk relies on an innovative and now widely recognized care concept that is tailored to their needs. "The idea behind it is that people with dementia can only thrive if they understand their surroundings," says Frans Boshart, manager of the care village. The residents should feel at home.
