This semi-detached house, forming part of the fabric of a long-established residential area near Munich, is distinguished externally by the additional storey on top of the extension. The structure rises boldly above the existing line of the roof and houses an attic studio. At the junction between the new and existing parts of the house, a staircase links the upper floor with the studio. To mark the threshold situation – across the former external wall – the staircase is divided into two parts at this point. The lower section is a projecting three-dimensional timber element, the treads and risers of which are supported by the strings. The upper section has a negative form, the side walls serving as a balustrade from which the steps are suspended.
