Studio Units in Ennetbaden, Switzerland

Erected in 1920 in an attractive position on the banks of the River Limmat, the building was originally used as a tannery. The division of the hall into seven small studios with separate access reflects the original structure. A simple basic system was designed for the conversion, using only a few elements that can be variably inserted according to the situation. These comprise a brick sanitary cell with an integrated kitchenette, a wood-clad gallery, and a simple steel staircase, consisting of two Å-beam strings supporting steel treads on bent brackets. After the treads were painted, they were strewn with sand, and a further coat of paint was applied to create a rough, non-slip surface.
