Market Hall and Shops "In the Viaduct" in Zurich

Two monumental forked railway viaducts in Zurich separate a housing quarter from a former industrial district. The protected structure was converted over a length of 500 m into a transparent, linking urban element. Today, a pedestrian and cycle path runs along the disused southern railway strip. Shops and cafes were inserted between the piers of 53 of the viaduct archways, and dome lights were let into the roof areas The market hall forms the head structure, the folded roof of which sets a striking accent. Rising and falling segments link the two viaducts, and the transparent roof lights lend the interior a spacious effect. The new load-bearing structure is in a mixed form of steel and timber construction.
