Shelters in Winnipeg

Six mysterious wooden cocoons stand in the snow like fine origami folded structures outside the Canadian city of Winnipeg, near the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. As soon as the rivers freeze, kilometre long tracks and other areas are formed, which residents use for ice skating, ice hockey and walking. In recent times, the public has also been able to rest beneath temporary roofs that provide protection against the wind and weather. Wedge-shaped edge strips at the “base”, “ridge” and “spine” help to stabilize the sheets, for which the architects developed an optimum bending curvature. Cut-outs, holes and openings help to reduce excessive tensions in the wafer-thin material.
