Technology: Mobile Roof Covering to the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg

In 1693, to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, 96 arcaded boxes for spectators were cut in the rock wall of the Mönchsberg around the courtyard of the Felsenreitschule. Since the 1920s, this arena has been used for open-air performances as part of the Salzburg Festival, and over the years, it has undergone various extensions. In 1969, for example, the architect Clemens Holzmeister designed an extendible membrane roof over the stage area, which had hitherto been exposed to the elements. This simple but elegant covering had long outlived its purpose, however, and in 2008, new plans were drawn up for the future use of the Felsenreitschule.
