Office and laboratory building in Bergamo

Internationally connected and at the same time locally rooted - this is how the cement manufacturer Italcementi represents itself with the new office and laboratory building "i.lab" on the outskirts of Bergamo. Designed by the famed architect, Richard Meier, the new-build is situated directly adjacent to the motorway that links Milan to Venice. It also marks the entrance to the industrial estate, Il Kilometro Rosso, with a concrete roof that cantilevers almost 19 metres. The exterior landscape of the building, comprising an area of 1.8 hectares, has been planted with indigenous species from the local Bergamo area. These include some rare types of ancient fruit trees and varieties of maize crops, which are being cultivated by cooperatives and organisations from the Slow Food Movement.
