Technology: An Acrylic-glass Curtain Secured with Adhesives - Vitra's SANAA Factory

 - Frank Kaltenbach

As light as a curtain billowing in the breeze – that is how SANAA imagined the new factory hall at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. From the very beginning it was clear to Sejima and Nishizawa that the curtain’s folds must appear random – they should by no means bring to mind a repetitive facade adhering to a grid. The lightness and lyricism for which the Japanese architects’ buildings are world-renowned is what motivated the clients to commission them. A new typology, this novel factory demonstrates digital design and the fully automated production of contemporary furniture. And this explains why the new building sets itself apart from the existing halls.
