Report: Expo.02 in Switzerland

From 15 May to 20 October 2002, Switzerland will present itself in the form of the Expo.02. For the first time, this national exhibition will not be restricted to a single city, but will be staged in an entire region, the three lakes area in the north-west of the country. Four exhibition sites, or “arteplages” as they have been called, will be mounted on and next to the lakes in Biel, Murten, Neuchâtel and Yverdon-les-Bains. The locations are only a few kilometres apart, and the arteplages are conceived as a unity of art and shoreline, town and lake, culture and nature. Each of the arteplages comprises an exhibition park on the lake shore and a “forum”, or platform, on the water. The four sites are devoted to different themes, which are reflected in the architecture and the displays.
