On the north side of the existing museum - a fine Art Deco building - a new wing has been added, with a glazed atrium forming a link between the old and new structures. The exhibition spaces have a steel frame construction, clad externally with composite panels, consisting of precast concrete faced with a thin layer of stone approximately 32 mm thick. The pink-coloured stone - Etowah Fleuri - is the same as that used for the monolithic original structure in 1931. The new tract is articulated externally by the stacked bonding of the façade panels with dark mastic jointing. Internally, half-barrel vaults rise from the central services wall to north-facing clerestory lights over the circulation zones along the outer walls.
