The Fortified Hill of Osoppo, Friuli
The citadel of Osoppo is a site of great historical interest. As part of the reconstruction work to the Casa del Tamburo (see DETAIL 95/4), a new steel structure was inserted within the remains of the existing walls, and a new roof was added. A steel spiral staircase leads from the ground floor to a gallery at first floor level, from where an outdoor bridge links the building to a path leading up the hill. Step-high tubular sections with treads welded on are "threaded" on to the tubular central column of the staircase. The trapezoidal treads consist of angle frames filled with bars set out radially.
