House and Studio in Tsukuba, Japan

This two-storey house, built for an artist, is situated on a gently sloping site in a small clearing in an oak wood near Mount Tsukuba. The timber skeleton frame - a post and beam structure - facilitates an ideal integration of the building into the landscape. On the ground floor is the artist's studio; the living quarters are on the upper floor, accessible via a bridge from the garden. A balcony round the entire house provides a generous outdoor extension of the living areas.
