"De la Bastille" Viaduct in Paris

Erected in 1859, the viaduct served until 1969 to support a raised urban railway line. The City of Paris purchased the structure in 1986, intending to rehabilitate it and to create two new uses: a pedestrian promenade on the upper level and ground-level shops in the arches below - mainly for the arts and crafts products that are traditional to this district. The upper deck was landscaped with plants, paths, pools of water, pergolas and benches.
