Umbrellas for the "Summer Opening" in Buckingham Palace, London
Designed not only for the opening of Buckingham Palace to visitors in summer, but for garden parties, exhibitions and other events, the canopies are based on the 3.60 m modular dimension of the palace. The system consists of a steel framed base with a hardwood deck, in the middle of which is a tubular aluminium column supporting the actual canopy. The central column also acts as a drainpipe, conducting rainwater from the white canvas covering into the ground. Slender tie rods at the corners of the umbrella serve to resist wind loads.
