A replica of the sailing ship "Matthew", in which John Cabot discovered Newfoundland in 1497, is being built in Bristol. In addition to a steel frame canopy to protect the ship's timbers from the elements and direct sunlight, a raised viewing platform, and exhibition and shop facilities were created. The visitor centre "pods" consist of plywood on wood frames with translucent GRP screens. The main canopy structure is constructed of square hollow steel sections. The purlins of the 25° shed roof curve alternately upwards and downwards to create the wave-like form.
