The existing house, dating from 1952, was designed by Gerrit Rietveld's son Jan. The extension is a steel and glass structure that seeks to preserve the integrity of the existing building. Load-bearing panes of glass are fixed with adhesive to the steel roof structure. A partition divides the extension into two halves. Suspended from this partition is a row of stainless steel kitchen units with matt glass doors, through which one can indistinctly see the contents within. The shower, WC and wardrobe cupboards are integrated in a stainless steel block, inserted between the bedroom and bathroom.
