Archaeological Shelter in Melchnau

In 1949, the remains of a late-Romanesque chapel were discovered in the ruins of Grünenberg Castle in Melchnau. The original pavings consist of clay tiles with a richly ornamented surface. They are attributed to the brickworks of nearby St Urban's Monastery. As part of the overall restoration work to the castle ruins, a new protective structure was built over the pavings to replace the dilapidated old shelter. With its simple shed roof, the new structure resembles a large showcase and has a similar form to the original chapel. The slender timber frame is clad with sheet copper panels with canted edges.
