Umbrella Roof in Courtyard of Wasseralfingen Palace, Aalen

Having been saved from decay, the palace has been used since 1992 by a logopaedic school. To open the building to a broader public, proposals were made to use the courtyard for theatrical and musical events; but initial plans to install a protective covering against the rain met with the opposition of the conservation authorities. A temporary umbrella-like structure that could be put up as required proved to be an acceptable solution to the problem. The courtyard is roughly 14 x 14.6 m in size. The four "umbrellas", based on a 6.1 x 6.4 m grid, are set at different heights and overlap each other.
