Housing System, Ohio, USA
In an 'Affordable Housing Initiative' run by the American journal, Progressive Architecture, Abacus architects' system was the winner. The aim was to provide flexible, low-cost but good quality modern housing for majority needs, i.e. non-'standard' households. Based on the American vernacular tradition, a modular design was developed which allows for a variety of different ground plans. Great detail and ingenuity were necessary in planning all aspects, in view of the industrialised manufacture of the prototype. The roof, for example, folds down for transportation.
