In 1985 the town of Baden invited designs for a new local history museum, to be erected on a key riverside site next to a historic bridge and castle, and backed by limestone cliffs. Old and new buildings always have a reciprocal effect on each other and the natural surroundings, and the architect must be aware of this relationship if he is to create a building responsive to the situation and one able to bring about an interesting and positive redefinition of the area. Wilfried and Katharina Steib's use of forms and their blend of concrete, steel, glass, wood and titanium zinc sheet achieve just such a dialogue with the existing townscape.
