Centre for Literature in Vienna

The new, larger premises for Vienna's Centre for Modern Literature consist of two floors, a basement and a raised ground floor. The building also has an extension built over a courtyard. A drama centre had once occupied the premises. In addition to the general poor state of the building, the interior was dark and gloomy, with very little daylight filtering through to the deeper recesses. Thus, a design priority for the conversion was to achieve maximum natural light at all levels. A large area under the former main room was linked with the new central library, bringing light down into the basement.
