In converting the loft space in this house the aim was to create extra living space and to bring more light into the top floor flat, while respecting the characteristic turn-of-the-century outward appearance of the building. Ecological and economic factors also had a role to play. The architects created a central hall, lit from above by a new rooflight set in the ridge of the mansard roof, 7 m above the hall floor. No fittings block the path of light; even the gallery floor is of clear glass. Light can also filter through translucent walls into the rooms bordering the hall. Sliding partition elements further help to create space and versatility, in contrast to the usual 'boxiness' and narrow confines of such flats.
