Municipal Library in Neuburg on the Danube

The main part of the library is housed in a fully glazed cylindrical building over an underground car park. The glass façade is held in a self-supporting post and beam system construction in aluminium, screwed to the r.c. floors. A number of ways were employed to maximise daylight and eliminate glare and overheating - parapet walls are in laminated glass with a layer of matt film; blinds in reflecting material provide an effective sunblock when required; and angled aluminium louvres hung inside the façade reflect light up onto the matt aluminium ceilings. There is no artificial lighting between the bookshelves. At night flourescent lighting reflectors at the level of the bottom most louvre take over the job of lighting the shelves area.
