Department Store, Schwäbisch Hall

The fine lines and transparent façades of this large store optically reduce its bulk, providing a stimulating but not overpowering contrast to the old town setting. The core and floors of the building are of reinforced concrete, cantilevered edges helping to keep sales areas largely column-free. A filigree steel construction forms the building's shell, acting as support for both roof and glass façades. The double angle columns have pin-jointed connections back to the floors to allow for temperature adjustment. Joints also structurally separate the transition from roof to façade at the verge and eaves.
