Western Entrance to the Danube Barracks in Ingolstadt

At the western end of a 160 m long former barracks building is a small sloping paved area, 1.15 m below the level of the ground floor. The fine lines of the new entrance contrast with the sparsely punctuated expanse of rendered wall. The choice of materials was governed by surrounding use. Thus, granite was used for the solid rectangular steps, concrete for the plinth and limestone for the parapet cladding. A counterpoint is set up by the steel in landing, railings and canopy. Encircling I-sections support the cantilevered landing, and narrow angle and flat steel sections hold the canopy glazing.
