With the construction of the Main-Danube Waterway along the Altmühl valley, and the resulting necessity to replan traffic routing, the Kelheim authorities opted also for a timely redevelopment of the town centre. Two closely finked objectives were set - to give a new look to the streets and squares, and to reduce traffic down to an absolute minimum in the old town. While the first of these has been achieved, the second is unfortunately still a matter for experimentation. Large sections of the town have now been 'reclaimed' for the pedestrian. Wide paved areas provide ample space for strolling and also allow local cafes to expand into the sunshine.
