In redesigning the squares and streets in the old part of Forchheim, the planners aimed to increase the attractivity of the town for business and leisure. The main changes were a reduction of traffic speed and volume in the town centre and the reintroduction of a once typical Forchheim feature - an open water channel down the middle of the main street. Until this century such water courses had served for both street cleaning and fire-fighting purposes. The 300 m long narrow 'stream', switching several times from one side to the other of the main street, enlivens the town scene and opens up interesting possibilities for the division of urban spaces.
