Erected in 1856, the building has a sandstone basement and saddle roof. In 1883 a single height extension with hipped metal sheet roof was added on the north side. The aim in renovation work was to provide each flat with a private outside area and a direct connection to the southern slope of the old part of Berne. The original building structure was to be retained as far as possible. With the addition of covered gallery space around the outside of the building and three bridge links between the house and the slope, both these aims were achieved, while also creating a smooth transition between natural and built environment.
